Mobile Phone Safety |
| It is now
three years since the introduction of
legislation, in December 2003, governing the
use of mobile phones and other electronic
communication devices such as PDAs whilst
driving. Many drivers however are still
flouting the law, despite risking a £30
fixed penalty or up to £1,000 on conviction
in court (£2,500 for drivers of goods
vehicles, buses or coaches).
For this reason, there have recently been
a lot of developments in this area both in
the UK and Ireland. Ireland has just
announced new legislation on the use of
mobile phones in cars and the UK is planning
a change in the law in the New Year. The
latest proposal is for a 3-point endorsement
and £60 (upwards) fine if you are caught
using a mobile phone in your car, though
this is yet to be ratified by the House of
Lords.
