Cheap Headsets – are
they really worth it? |
 This
is a scenario that we have come across repeatedly. A UK
organisation
has a US parent company. The UK company needs headset
equipment and asks for approval from the US parent for
the expenditure. This is declined as headsets are
cheaper in the US. The parent company ships over a
number of headsets for use in the UK.
This is
where the problems start. We have had instances where
the call quality has been extremely poor or where there
has been unexplained ‘interference’ on the line. Let’s
look at what happens next:
-
When the UK company sends the headsets back for
repair, the warranty cannot be honoured as the
headsets are not of UK specification.
-
When it is explained to the UK company that not only
can the headsets not be repaired, but that they will
be liable for any personnel grievances or injuries
suffered because the headsets are not CE marked -
therefore unapproved for the UK market and have none
of the relevant safety cut outs - they are panic
stricken.
Cordless headsets compared to corded headsets are an
increasing minefield. Cordless headsets in the UK and US
operate on different frequencies and have different
power requirements - so the potential problems are
immense.
The moral of the story - the wise man buys from his
local supplier where he can be guaranteed support and
approved product.
Price is not everything.
