Cheap Headsets –
are they really worth it?
In an increasingly cost-conscious world
companies are more focused on “price” and cost
savings. But is “price” the only rationale on which
to base a buying decision? A telephone headset on
the face of it is a simple, generic device, with one
headset looking and functioning much like another.
But are you really making cost savings and are these
similarities only skin deep?
There are many pitfalls that the unsuspecting
buyer can fall into when making these decisions.
There are many bargains out there, with headsets
advertised at unbelievable prices on the Internet.
So, what danger can there be in saving money?
Headsets are manufactured to strict
specifications, complying with CE standards and EEC
legislation. However U.S imports do not meet EEC
legislation in that U.S sourced headsets do not
provide “acoustic shock” protection. Any company
knowingly or otherwise providing such headsets to
their staff could be putting both themselves and
their staff at undue risk and exposing themselves to
expensive legal claims procedures. The little extra
time taken to make sure that the headset you buy is
CE compliant is well worth it. Even easier, ensure
that you always purchase headset equipment from a
reputable source.
The message of “caveat emptor” (buyer beware) has
never been so relevant. Would you ever buy a car
without wheels? There are numerous examples where
cost reduction has ended up costing more. In recent
months we have seen:
- Headsets at unbeatable prices, but on
delivery didn’t work because the headsets were
supplied without the appropriate bottom end
cables for the telephone system.
- Reconditioned headsets being passed on as
new
- Headsets imported from US that are not CE
compliant
These all seem to be good buys but with a hidden
catch, guaranteed to break the budget and cause
aggravation! The more reputable companies ensure
that you receive the best advice from your account
manager and deliver headsets with appropriate cables
to function properly and safely. They are also
properly trained and accredited by the manufacturer.
If you are offered headsets at prices that are
unrepeatable, is this the equivalent of buying a car
that has been “clocked”? The more unscrupulous
elements in the communications industry have been
passing off refurbished equipment as new. Even if
you are knowingly buying refurbished equipment can
your supplier provide you with a certificate of
compliance for acoustic shock protection? In this
situation the cost savings pale into insignificance
when compared with the legal bill of defending a
claim from a member of staff and paying
compensation. At present this can run into many 10’s
of thousands of pounds plus increased insurance
premiums.
