Don't be an April Fool!!!!
How prepared are you for the “Noise At Work Directive”?

The European Union’s Noise at Work Directive is due to take effect on the 6th April 2006. This lays down new rules for protecting hearing and specifies the minimum health and safety requirements regarding the exposure of workers to risks from excessive noise.

The Directive specifies levels that you need to be aware of. The key ones are:

  • If noise exposure is above 80dB(A), the employer must take action to protect staff
  • The weighted average noise exposure level measured over a working day must not exceed 85dB(A).
  • It is not illegal to work in environments with noise levels exceeding these levels but it must be for shorter time periods.

So if you have members of staff who are exposed to ‘uncomfortable’ noise levels where noise exposure is high, you need to consider taking action to reduce their noise exposure or reducing working hours to compensate.

Corrective action could be a combination of

  • Improving the office environment with screening or other noise absorbency techniques
  • Providing amplifiers that limit noise exposure for staff using headsets following a re-examination of the equipment that they are using.

The major headset manufacturers, GN Netcom, Plantronics, Clement Clarke Communications and Sennheiser, have all been working on solutions to help you meet the new Directive.

Cleaning up your Act!!!
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommend that you change your headset consumables (ear cushions and microphone covers) every 6 MONTHS!!! Are you aware of this?
  • Do you have staff that ‘share’ or inherit headsets from their predecessors?
  • Do you clean them up?
  • Do you have high sickness levels relating to ear and throat complaints, colds that circulate round the office?

Replacing headset consumables can help minimize these complaints. If you would like to know what consumables are available for your headsets call or email us for your free accessory listing. Our specialist advisors will be happy to help you!

Customer anecdote....
Mike Dalton, International Project Manager for DMS Controls Ltd writes

While in Ethiopia our client, the Sheraton Hotel in Addis Ababa Ethiopia, approached us to see if we could obtain some new telephone headsets as the current ones had failed.

We spoke to the manufacturers who gave us names of two suppliers in UK. The first one we contacted proved very unhelpful wanting me to send all kind of details before they would be prepared to even give me price and availability. Needless to say they did not get the order.

I then phoned Chris at Communications Solutions UK Limited who proved very helpful and put up with my lack of technical expertise. With his advice and using digital photos of the headsets and switchboard he quickly selected the correct units and produced a quotation. We immediately ordered five units which were sent by DHL to Ethiopia arriving safely and quickly.

The client was very impressed with the service and subsequently placed an order for an additional five units. I was very impressed with the attention paid to ensuring we got the correct units as this was not a very large order in terms of value but was important to the client in order to keep the switchboard of this busy hotel operating efficiently.

Working in Africa is very challenging as obtaining spares and technical assistance is difficult and you need to have knowledgeable suppliers as mistakes can be very expensive to rectify.

When I returned to the UK a few weeks later I brought with me some real Ethiopian coffee beans which had been picked and roasted a few days previously as a thank you to the staff at Communications Solutions UK for all their help.
